After a strong conclusion to the regular season, CBA Lacrosse is looking to make a statement in the postseason.
Currently ranked in NJ.com’s Top 20, the Colts recorded a 12-5 overall record and a 7-1 record in the Shore Conference. Their nearly-flawless Shore campaign earned them the number one seed in the conference tournament, receiving a BYE in the first two rounds. It also means that they will have home field advantage for the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
“We have been consistently improving every day,” sophomore Danny Varone explained. “Practice-wise, we have been implementing new things offensively and defensively. We have definitely grown throughout the season.”
Varone has been a pivotal player for the Colts this season, leading the team in goals (39) and points (47). A key part of Varone's and the team’s success has been the seniors' leadership.
“The seniors have taken on a tremendous role,” Varone stated. “Caden Lucich and Shayne Boresen have made humongous impacts this year.”
The Colts have flexed their muscle throughout multiple points in the season, including against their division rival Rumson-Fair Haven on April 7. CBA earned a hard-fought, 13-12 victory over the ninth-ranked team in the state. In a four-game, Shore winning streak to wrap up the regular season, the Colts defeated two of the conference’s best in Southern Regional and Manasquan.
With the postseason just around the corner, the Colts look to win now, even though some of the team’s best players are still young.
“We want to win the Shore Conference Tournament. Everyone said that this was a rebuilding year, we’re ready to prove everyone wrong,” Varone said. “As for states, we want a positive takeaway, and learn that we can play against anybody. Hopefully, we can get some wins too.”
The Colts will eye their sixth Shore Conference Championship, beginning with a quarterfinal game against the eighth seeded Wall on May 16.
