For Chris Alexander, his success in fencing didn’t just happen overnight.

The junior épéeist for the Colts has been building toward this season since he first picked up a blade. Now, after a 17-6 season, he’s earned CBADN’s Fencer of the Season.

“I thought [fencing] sounded really interesting,” Alexander said. “I went to a camp there, at Freehold Fencing Academy, and I loved it. The week after … I begged my mom to go back, constantly.”

That’s when it started, and ever since, he’s just kept getting better.

As a freshman, Alexander went 12-8, solid.
Sophomore year, 11-7. Continuing to improve.
But this winter, everything came together for him.

Seventeen wins. Big opportunities. Great moments.

He became someone that the team could count on every time he stepped on the strip.

“Our epee team had two new starters this year, and I saw Chris being an excellent captain to them,” head coach Ali Shafaie said. “He really tapped into his experiences fencing at higher levels to help our young epee team compete, and I am sure next year will be great since we have the same seven epee fencers returning.”

Alexander showed up against strong teams like St. Augustine and Bernards, helping CBA take control early in matches. Even in tighter meets, like a one point loss against Livingston, he proved he could hang with anyone.

“Livingston was I think number one, if not, top three team in the state,” he said. “Our guys being in it, not letting their nerves get to them… that was definitely a top moment of this season.”

That quote says a lot about Alexander. He’s not just focused on himself; he’s locked in with the team. That energy shows in the way he fences. As an épéeist, you have to stay patient and you cannot rush. Alexander has really grown into that style of play, knowing when to strike and staying composed.

After junior year, he amassed a 40-21 career record, but that doesn’t change Alexander’s viewpoint on his goals, though. He is simply ready to get even better for his senior campaign.
