Christian Brothers Academy is excited to announce the hiring of Matthew Nunnally as the new head coach of the varsity swimming program.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome Matt to the CBA community as our new swim coach,” Director of Athletics Nicholas Mariniello said. “His Division I collegiate coaching resume speaks for itself and we look forward to him sharing his vast knowledge and talent with our swimmers.”
For the past 10 years, Nunnally has been the head men’s and women’s swimming coach at Monmouth University. His time as the Hawks’ head coach included helping dozens of swimmers win individual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) titles in various events. He was responsible for Monmouth swimmers bringing the first-ever individual conference titles back to campus in 2019.
The Avon-by-the-Sea native will now take his turn at leading the championship swimming program at the Academy.
“Growing up in Monmouth County, I have seen the continued greatness of CBA Athletics and the swimming program over many years,” Nunnally said. “I am beyond excited to join the department and lead the swimming team to future success.”
Before his time at Monmouth, Nunnally was the head men’s and women’s coach at La Salle University, his alma mater, for 16 seasons. He also served as the university’s aquatics director.
His coaching prowess was cemented at La Salle, where 30 swimmers broke school records and 10 Explorers won Atlantic 10 Conference individual titles. Nunnally was named the 2012 Atlantic 10 Women’s Coach of the Year.
Nunnally will bring his collegiate coaching experience to a CBA team that has been in contention for state titles every year since 2010.
“The biggest thing for me will be teaching the team about the skills they will need to be successful in college and beyond,” Nunnally said. “Those skills include time management, goal setting and teamwork. Swimming has always been a great way of teaching hard work, dedication and resilience, as well as promoting community.”
Nunnally has additional experience as an assistant coach at Seton Hall University and as St. Rose High School’s head swim coach.
As a collegiate swimmer at La Salle, he was a member of four straight MAAC championships and won eight MAAC individual titles. He has also competed as a national team member of the United States Lifesaving Association.
Of course, CBA Swimming is no stranger to success. The Colts have won 34 consecutive Shore Conference and Monmouth County titles, which are streaks that date back to when the team was founded.
The Academy has won 11 NJSIAA Non-Public state championships, 10 of which have come since 2010.
Nunnally is more than ready to help bring home state title number 12.
“The first goal will be to establish a culture of working to our best ability - individually and collectively - in the pursuit of excellence,” he said. “The standard of success for CBA Swimming has been established. Our goal will be to work to that standard every day.”
The Colts will hit the pool in November before their regular season begins in December.
