Christian Brothers Academy Hockey continued its tradition of hosting an outdoor Winter Classic contest on January 16.

On a beautiful, 40-degree Martin Luther King Day, the Colts welcomed La Salle Academy, one of Rhode Island's top hockey teams, to Navesink Country Club in Middletown. CBA emerged with a convincing 6-1 victory, showing its potent combination of high-powered offense and tough defense.

In a clash of two Lasallian schools, CBA came out aggressive in the first period, scoring four goals in the opening 20 minutes. Dominic Szczygiel scored twice in the first, while Sean Guinnessey and Troy Mulholland added goals.

Szczygiel would make it a hat trick in the second period, adding a third goal to push CBA's lead to 5-0. Michael Gravina would make it a 6-0 score in the third period, before LSA added a goal with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Andrew Skorupka saved 32 of 33 shots and CBA's defense stayed stout throughout the contest. William Thygeson added an impressive five assists on the day.

In a special moment, both teams joined together at center ice for a postgame prayer. It was a great display of the Lasallian brotherhood that transcends final scores, uniform colors, or distance between schools.

It was CBA's fifth straight win and 10th in its last 11 games. The Colts will have eight games left in regular season play before the Gordon Conference Tournament begins in mid-February.
