Fifteen student-athletes from Christian Brothers Academy celebrated National Signing Day on November 12, committing to continue their academic and athletic careers at universities across the country.

Five different CBA varsity sports - baseball, crew, cross country, track & field and wrestling - were represented at the ceremony.

“Congratulations to these 15 student-athletes for earning the opportunity to play collegiate athletics at excellent institutions,” said Director of Athletics Nicholas Mariniello. “The CBA community celebrates their continued hard work, both in the classroom and in their sport. We are excited to watch them pursue their passions at the next level.”

The following Academy men committed on November 12:

Amani Borders, Fairfield University Crew
Ryan Collins, Boston University Cross Country/Track & Field
Danny DiTullio, Northeastern University Baseball
Wyatt Falkowski, Florida State University Cross Country/Track & Field
Kieran Feeney, Fairfield University Crew
Sean Galvin, Marist University Cross Country/Track & Field
Luke Hnatt, University of Virginia Cross Country/Track & Field
Colin Hoverter, University of Massachusetts Baseball
Dylan Iwanyk, University of Michigan Baseball
Christian Johnson, Fairfield University Crew
Sean Loggie, University of Virginia Baseball
Jared Matejicka, Thomas Jefferson University Baseball
Jayden Matejicka, Thomas Jefferson University Baseball
Tyler Palumbo, Rutgers University Wrestling
WIll Sakoutis, Columbia University Wrestling
On the heels of an excellent season last spring, CBA Baseball led the way with six commitments. All six student-athletes contributed to the Colts’ state sectional title and appearance in the state championship game.

“CBA has challenged me both athletically and academically in more ways than one,” Hoverter said. “The theme of relentless pressure on and off the field has taught me not only to work harder, but also to take things slower in a more careful manner. Whether it was sophomore year chemistry or a 1 for 24 stretch at the plate, the trials have been outweighed by the success because I learned to trust the process and put myself in a better position to succeed.”

Of course, CBA Cross Country and Track & Field were represented by four outstanding distance runners. These four runners helped CBA win a 34th cross country state championship on November 8 and played a role in both the indoor and outdoor track state titles last school year.

“Ever since I came in as a freshman, Coach McCafferty, Coach Lunny, and Coach Torchia have instilled the idea to dream big and to not limit myself,” Hnatt said. “They have pushed me each and everyday to my best ability, which has motivated me to work even harder as I move onto the college level.”

Borders, Feeney and Johnson were recently part of CBA Crew’s Varsity 4 boat that represented the Academy at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The Varsity 4 boat finished in the top 20 out of over 80 crews.

Meanwhile, Palumbo and Sakoutis were two of 10 CBA wrestlers to qualify for the individual state championships last winter. They helped CBA capture yet another district championship and finish undefeated in Shore Conference matches.

The Academy looks forward to celebrating additional collegiate athletic commitments in the spring.

WHAT THE STUDENT-ATHLETES ARE SAYING

“CBA has challenged me both academically and athletically to perform at my best due to high expectations for all students. They have formed me into the student-athlete I am today and helped me mature along the way. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the help and support I have received from the faculty and staff.” - Dylan Iwanyk, University of Michigan Baseball

“My coaches have refused to give up on me and have stood by me through the highs and lows. With tough love both academically and athletically, I learned how to handle myself and be prepared for any adversity that comes my way.” - Ryan Collins, Boston University Cross Country

“The multitude of rigorous classes that I have taken at CBA have all pushed me intellectually, and helped shape me into the young man I am today. I have grown tremendously both on and off the mat since I walked into CBA as a freshman. This growth is a testament to the power of not only a Lasallian education, but of a CBA education in particular. As a result of being surrounded by such high caliber coaches and teachers, I now feel more than prepared to succeed at the collegiate level as a student athlete.” - Will Sakoutis, Columbia University Wrestling

“Playing sports in college is very challenging, but the academics and being able to manage the workload is vital for success. CBA has been instrumental in mirroring the workload necessary to be successful at the next level. CBA has taught me time management, working ahead, and asking for help.” - Jayden Matejicka, Thomas Jefferson University Baseball

“At CBA, we take everything to the next level, whether it’s in the classroom or in training. Everything we do here prepares us not just for college, but for life. Along the way, we’ve also learned the importance of time management and how mastering it can set us up for success in anything we do.” - Sean Galvin, Marist University Cross Country
