Coach Mary Mottola has played an integral role in developing the varsity fencing program at Christian Brothers Academy.
Coach Mottola started the CBA Fencing Club in 2010, and with sustained interest and growth, CBA established fencing as a varsity sport in 2012. Coach Mottola continues to include newcomers to the sport, making up almost 75% of the team. Under Coach Mottola’s leadership, CBA has garnered district and squad championships, a state champion in foil, state finalist in epee and numerous fencers have been selected to the all-state team.
The most prestigious title came in 2018 when CBA won the Cetrulo Tournament, the largest high school fencing tournament in the country. Since the start of Coach Mottola’s arrival at CBA, CBA fencers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level including The University of Pennsylvania, Sacred Heart University, Brandeis University and Stevens Institute of Technology. Coach Mottola is a NFHS Certified Interscholastic Coach and a Professional Member of the USFA.
