Saying that senior Sebastian Rivera enjoyed this past weekend is probably an understatement.
Rivera won the highly-regarded Super 32 youth wrestling tournament in Greensboro, N.C., besting 128 other wrestlers in the 113-pound division. Ironically, the final match was against Delbarton's Patrick Glory.
To add to his win, Rivera verbally committed- at the tournament no less- to continue his wrestling career at Northwestern University.
The CBA standout finished fifth in the NJSIAA Championship at
113-pounds last March and will move up to wrestle in the 120-pound division this season. Rivera went 36-2 last season, with his only two losses coming in the state championships.
"I think Northwestern wrestling and I want to be part of it," Rivera said Sunday after winning the Super 32. "Northwestern is one of the few places in the country where you can get a remarkable education and be on a Top 20 wrestling program in the Big Ten."
Rivera chose Northwestern over big conference schools such as Arizona State, Duke and Cal-Poly.
"I liked the school, the entire team was cool and the coaching staff has everyone wanting the same goal, being All-Americans," Rivera said.
With a year left in his CBA career, Rivera is focused on winning a state championship before his time as a Colt is over. After his title at the Super 32, Rivera's outlook looks bright and his determination is high.
"I want to win a state title bad," Rivera said. "I've been training hard."
