For just the second time in program history, Christian Brothers Academy Fencing completed an undefeated regular season.

The Colts went 8-0 since opening the season just before Christmas. They follow the 2017-2018 team, which went 7-0 that year.

"I could talk forever about this special group," head coach Ali Shafaie said. "They've been wanting to improve since day one and these results prove it."

The season included highlight victories over local and state rivals such as Holmdel, St. Augustine and Don Bosco.

The Sabre squad carried the way with an impressive 64-8 record over the eight dual meets. It was the senior duo of Matthew Kim (17-0) and Erick Shi (15-1) that propelled this squad to new heights. Five more fencers won at least five bouts, showing some incredible depth.

Led by Kim, Shi, Van Jones and Declan O’Grady, Sabre took the bronze medal at the Cetrulo Tournament on January 21. They were the catalysts in helping the team to a third place overall finish out of 55 teams.

The Foil squad was led by freshman Samuel Belokon, who finished the year with a 16-3 record. The foil fencers also finished eighth at the Cetrulo Tournament.

Freshman Chris Alexander was on the A strip for the Epee squad, finishing 10-6 overall.

All three squads finished above .500 on the season, which is a feat that not many teams can claim.

With the regular season in the rear view mirror, CBA had a great showing at the District Championship to qualify for the state tournament. The Colts finished third overall to propel them to the eighth seed in the state tournament.

The Sabre team placed second, Epee team was third, and foil team came in fifth at the Districts. Kim, Shi and Belokon each qualified for the individual state tournament.

Alexander was joined by Bernardino Muniz, Kevin Polinger, Brennan Fulcher and Charles Bauberger for the Epee squad's standout third place finish at the Districts.

The team state tournament kicks off on February 15, while the individual state tournament will take place on March 2.
